Hanging Rock State Park
Danbury, North Carolina
February 26th

These shots were taken on a 60 degree day in February at Hanging Rock. This is about 20 miles northwest of Winston Salem, near Pilot Mountain. Although there are many trails and great overlooks at this park, I only had time to shoot a few of the great waterfalls there. Even though it was warm, there was still plenty of ice at the falls, in the places the sunlight hasn't reached. I will try to go there again in the summer and fall, when there is more foliage to frame the falls.

4th of July Park
Kernersville, North Carolina
February 20th

This shot is located the 4th of July Park in Kernersville, North Carolina. It is a very small stream that runs straight through the middle of the park, with several wooden bridges intersecting it. I put my camera with wide angle lens practically on the rocks, and grabbed this shot while the sun was low in the sky

Pittsboro, North Carolina February 19th

These shots are of a small brook that feeds into the Haw River in Pittsboro, North Carolina. It had rained the night before, which sent a good flow over the rocks in this brook the next day. I put my tripod in the water, with the camera about 6 inches over the water. I used a 17mm wide angle lens, as well as a neutral density filter to give me a long exposure. Every shot was HDR, so that I could grab the detail in the background woods, as well as the detail in the soft water foreground.

Kernersville, North Carolina February 17th

Two days  later, I decided to go back and take some more pictures of that barn, because the sunset was especially pretty that evening. I composed the old tobacco barn just as I had earlier in the week. The barn and silo are from Olde Homeplace Golf Club. All shots are HDR, so I could get both detail in the sunset and in the foreground.

Union Cross Road
Kernersville, North Carolina
February 15th

These photos are of an old tobacco barn on Union Cross Road in Kernersville, North Carolina. The barn is of course not in use anymore, and has a rusted roof, broken out windows, and rotted wood. However, it makes a classic early 1900's photograph. I performed HDR on all the shots, so I could get the thin clouds in the sky to show up, while preserving the details in the barn.

Salem Lake
Winston Salem, North Carolina
February 12th

These six photos were all taken at the Salem Lake City Park in Winston Salem, North Carolina. I headed to the lake about 30 minutes before sunset and walked around the trails trying to find some good angles. It is winter, so there wasn't much foliage on the trees, so I found some a marshy area at the edge of the lake to compose most of the shots. The pathway was lit by the low light coming from the sunset, and the dead leaves remaining on the trees turned into a golden orange. Also, most of the shots are HDR, which means its actually two images merged together to include both the highlights and shadows.

NC Beach Trip
Carolina Beach, North Carolina
February 7th, 8th

These sixteen photos were all taken on a weekend trip to the North Carolina Coast. All the pictures are either from Carolina or Kure Beach. I spent most of the time around the pier catching the sunrise. After the sunrise, I headed down to Fort Fisher about a mile down the road and got some shots of the rocks along the beach. A few of these shots, especially the sunrises, are HDR shots, consisting of multiple exposures to create a balanced shot.
